A POP (Point Of Presence) is a term that is commonly used in the internet industry to denote a central facility or hub which subscribers use to access the internet provider's broadband backbone.
A WIPOP (Wireless Internet Point of Presence) exists where subscribers are linked to the POP by a wireless connection and the broadband backbone is provided by either a hard- wire or high bandwidth wireless link.
WIPOPs provide a number of advantages over hard wire solutions:
- Easier and quicker installation
- Set up cost is a fraction of establishing hard wire systems
- Easy and inexpensive to upgrade as new technology demands and provides higher data rates
- No need to be dependent on the services and delays of local telcos
- Significantly lower costs of operation vs. hardware systems
The wireless equipment is broken down into five categories:
- Base Stations - This equipment provides your customers will a central point of connection with the Access Point and bandwidth mangement so you can evenly distribute your customers connection speeds. All-in-one solutions allow you to combine up to four Access Points in an outdoor enclosure.
- Client Equipment - This equipment is used by your customers to connect to your central point of connection (WIPOP). Our client antenna solutions have amplified and non amplified 802.11b radios built into flat panel antennas that can be wall or poll mounted. Ideally used to connect a building or house to your WIPOP. Wireless LAN devices can connect a single computer like a desktop or laptop to your WIPOP.
- Antennas - Our antennas allow you to spread or focus your wirless signal over a large area. 2.4 GHz models are used primarily between base station and client equipment but can be use to connect low cost bridges. The 5.8 GHz antennas are used for high speed wireless bridges such as our EX-1 or Link CX.
- Bi-Directional Amplifiers - Our high quality bi-directional amplifiers boost your wireless signal for extended range connections. By connecting an amplifier between your Access Point and antenna you can increase your chances of connecting to those hard to reach areas.
- Wireless Bridges - Our point to point wireless links connect your WIPOP to the wired backbone when it is not located in the same location. Our 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz can provide up to 45 Mbps throughput with distances of up to 40 miles. In metropolitan areas where the 2.4 and 5.8 GHz frequencies are crowded you can use our 24 and 60 GHz bridges which can provide up to gigabit ethernet rates but at much shorter distances.
